A Journey into Past Glamour for Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2015

For his second collection with Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière employed his futuristic sensibilities once more, this time on a larger scale. This ready-to-wear show for Paris Fashion Week took place in the Louis Vuitton Foundation Building in Bois de Boulogne, a new contemporary art museum opening at the end of this month. The show itself took place in a large black room, a space removed from time and context, and when the lights finally brightened, the audience had traveled back to the 1960s—in terms of the style on show, at least.

Body-conscious knit sweaters with loose neckties opened the show, and knitwear was paired with striped leather skirts, mini dresses and jackets. High-collar blouses and high-waisted trousers were also present, along with ivory and soft greens. The peasant skater dresses with corseted bodices and swishing skirts will surely be a hit with Louis Vuitton customers.

Ghesquière said of Edie Sedgwick, legendary 1960s icon and inspiration for the collection: “It’s kind of Edie, but it’s not a retro reference. She was in the ‘60s, but something about her look takes you forward into the early ‘80s. What I like to do is start with a reference, and then refine that look again and again ... until what remains is just itself. I didn’t do a big statement this time. I wanted to follow where I had started last season, to speak to that same cool girl.”
